Organic production and Organic egg

Organic production

Organic production increasingly has consumers who recognize the efforts of committed farmers and ranchers, and organic poultry farming is a good example.

For several years now, various socio-economic indicators have pointed to growing consumer interest in higher quality food products that have added value related to the production model from which they come, increasingly taking into account aspects such as animal welfare on the farm or environmental respect for the environment where they are raised.

Organic Production

In this sense, organic production stands out as a sustainable model. Since it more than meets the above premises, and is also profitable for the producers who choose it.

We could consider many examples in this area. One of the most valued by consumers is organic poultry production for laying eggs.

A study carried out by Trujillo and collaborators attempted to characterize and highlight the potential of organic laying poultry farming in Andalusia.

After analyzing 6 organic poultry farms for laying eggs, the authors concluded that there are various production models in this Community, with different management systems, facilities, and farm sizes, and significant differences in population, from 1,000 to 9,000 hens. However, they found that the determining factor in their profitability and efficiency was feed. A specific weight of between 40 and 60% of the total. Fundamentally associated with the variability in terms of quality and stability of the feed used. Since they directly affect the final production and, therefore, the overall economy of the farm.

Furthermore, in the conclusions of the work. The authors point out that despite the lack of specific advice for the first installation of the farms. Many of these were adapted from other production systems and the difficulties that organic production presents in obtaining replacement animals and organic feed when the farms are adequately managed. Health problems are scarce, and profitability is optimal, constituting an interesting alternative as a source of income in rural areas.

Finally, they emphasize the importance of consolidating associations of organic poultry producers to optimize the acquisition of organic animal feed. Obtain quality technical advice, and coordinate actions for the joint marketing of their products.

At the International School of Agro-Environmental Knowledge, we are convinced that organic production systems in general, and laying poultry. In particular, there are exciting alternatives capable of promoting sustainable rural development. Contributing to maintaining a living rural fabric and offering products of differentiated quality.
